PHIXER for Kick In/Out: in vs out mic phase that keeps body on mono fold

Kick in (beater / click) vs kick out (shell / sub) can feel huge in headphones. On phone playback, Bluetooth, club PA mono, or livestream fold, click stays and body dips, or the opposite. Polarity and a few samples of timing come first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo kick or drum bed you must keep stereo. It is not a kick replacer, and it does not replace a true mono listen on the bus.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a polarity button, not a delay matcher, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo bed you must keep stereo.

Three kick failure modes this page covers

Fast kick in/out mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Sum L+R on the kick or drum bus (or monitor controller mono). Listen to beater click and shell/sub with both mics open.
  2. A/B stereo vs mono across a few hits. Note what disappears: sub, body, or click that was actually cancellation.
  3. Mute the out mic briefly. Flip Ø on in, then on out. Keep the flip that returns body without killing click.
  4. Nudge a few samples of attack timing before chasing plugins. Confirm on a phone speaker, then again after bus EQ / compressor / saturation.

Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)

1. True mono listen on the full kick

Hard L+R sum or monitor mono with in and out both open. Habit: kick in/out checklist and mono check workflow.

2. One hero for body or click

Prefer one path for weight (usually out / sub) and one for beater. Do not let both fight as equal stereo width beds that steal Mid from the hero hit.

3. Polarity before more processing

Flip Ø on each path while mono. Keep the flip that returns body. Guide: polarity vs phase.

4. Attack timing before spectral tools

Nudge a few samples or ms so transient peaks agree. Often enough on its own on phones and clubs.

5. Skip when intentional click/body split is the point

Some mixes deliberately thin in mono for click vs body. Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo kick or drum bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
